Why refer here?

Why consider CBT-I?

  • Evidence-based care

CBT-I treats the behaviors and thought patterns that contribute to chronic insomnia.

  • Benefits during the day

Improved sleep can support mood, concentration and daily functioning.

  • Massachusetts insurance options

We participate in major commercial plans and Medicare. Our intake staff can help patients understand their options.

  • Benefits reviewed before care

Our team checks the patient’s insurance and explains expected costs before treatment begins.

  • Progress you can follow

With your patient’s consent, progress reports and Insomnia Severity Index scores help connect sleep treatment with ongoing care.

When insomnia warrants a referral

Consider specialist treatment for adults with:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep three or more nights a week for at least three months.
  • Fatigue, poor concentration or low mood related to poor sleep.
  • A wish to reduce reliance on sleep medication with their prescriber’s guidance.

Specialist support for patients already in therapy

CBT-I uses techniques developed specifically for insomnia. Patients can continue working with their therapist while our clinicians address sleep.

Care draws on training in sleep drive, circadian rhythms and the factors that maintain insomnia.

Suspect sleep apnea too?

Insomnia can persist alongside sleep apnea. Our Massachusetts team provides insomnia treatment and can help coordinate a separate evaluation for suspected apnea.

Score your own sleep

Answer all seven questions about the past two weeks. The Insomnia Severity Index adds your answers into a score between 0 and 28. This calculator does not submit a referral or add results to a medical record at Massachusetts Sleep Center.

For the first three questions, please rate the current (last 2 weeks) severity of your insomnia problem(s):

1. Difficulty falling asleep
2. Difficulty staying asleep
3. Problem waking up too early
4. How satisfied/dissatisfied are you with your current sleep pattern?
5. How noticeable to others do you think your sleep problem is in terms of impairing the quality of your life?
6. How worried/distressed are you about your current sleep problem?
7. To what extent do you consider your sleep problem to interfere with your daily functioning (e.g., daytime fatigue, mood, ability to function at work or with daily chores, concentration, memory) currently?

A score is not a diagnosis. Discuss the result and your sleep history with a licensed clinician. A referral to Massachusetts Sleep Center does not require a particular score.

Treatment begins

Across roughly eight to ten sessions, clinicians combine behavioral strategies with work on sleep-related thoughts and worry. Patients follow an individual sleep schedule and learn to reduce time spent awake in bed. We keep you informed of progress throughout the course.

3

We keep you informed

With your patient’s consent, progress reports and Insomnia Severity Index scores help connect sleep treatment with ongoing care.

Most patients meet with Massachusetts-licensed clinicians by video. A limited number of clinicians also see patients in person; the team confirms availability when booking.
